Basic Steering Axle Maintenance
Lubrication and maintenance follows the same procedure as that of the rigid axles. However, additional lubrication needs to be done on the steering knuckle of the self-steer axle. The lubrication of the steering knuckle needs to be repeated every 6 weeks with BPW special long life ECO-LiPlus grease in order to adhere to the warranty terms and conditions. The process of lubrication is described below.
Process Of LubricationStep 1: Step 2:
Lift the axle so that wheels are clear Rotate the steering axle until it locks and a
of the ground clearance is visible between the thrust washers, see Figure 1
Grease the knuckle, by using the bottom grease nipple (Figure 2), with ECO-LiPlus
until fresh grease is forced out between the thrust washers, see Figure 3
Figure 2 - DISC Brake Figure 2 - DRUM Brake
Step 4: Step 5:
Grease the knuckle, using the top grease Repeat the same process on the other
nipple (see Figure 2) with ECO-LiPlus until side of the axle.
fresh grease is forced out, see Figure 4.
Note: The use of a high-pressure central lubrication system which is capable of feeding special long life grease of consistency class 2-3 is permissible. The use of liquid lubricants is not permitted.
Check the vertical play of the steering pivot bearing. If the vertical play is greater than 13 mm
