Turntable Installation and Maintenance
BPW turntables are characterised by the high-quality feature of a double ball race to guarantee optimum distribution of the axial and radial forces that arise. The vertical loads acting on the turntable are absorbed by the load-carrying ball. The radial ball is responsible for absorbing the horizontal loads and it retains the upper and lower rings in place.
The torque loadings arising from braking and centrifugal force are absorbed in the interplay between the two ball races. The design of this system that has proven itself in years of application is demonstrated in everyday use of truck trailers, semi-trailers, heavy transporters and special vehicles. BPW turntables guarantee a minimum of downtime due to their long service life.
Installation of BPW turntables
The BPW code number, production data, turntable type and permitted axial load are punched onto the rating plate. The permitted axial load is the static vertical load and it only applies to vehicles with a speed up to 105km/h. A 25% higher axial load is permitted for vehicles with a speed up to 30km/h.
When mounting the turntable it must be ensured that the supporting structure for the lower and upper rings is smooth, level and torsionally rigid, otherwise deformation of the support structure can happen during operation and the operational safety might be compromised. Flatness of the contact surface must be less than 1 mm. The contact surface, divided into at least four equally sized surface portions evenly distributed around the circumference, must support at least 50% of the turntable flanges.
As additional security the top and bottom flanges must be secured against radial movement using at least 4 weld-on plates (shear blocks) each. This means that the radial forces occurring do not have to be absorbed exclusively by the connection bolts.
If drilling is carried out on the turntable care must be taken to ensure that no drilling chips or coolant penetrates the ball races.
Before operation the turntable must be filled with BPW special long-life grease ECO-Li 91 (lithium complex grease) prior to operation. Filling is done via the grease nipples.
Lubricate every 25,000 km of travel or at least quarterly (2-3 weeks under extreme conditions). Lubrication is done via the grease nipples and only ECO-Li 91 grease may be used.
